American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid during the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been absent, leading airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks due to weather and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy said in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their worries directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to find an alternative of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports indicated flights would be delayed due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the closure started.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest halt in history.

He has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," the official stated.

On that day, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the world, as well as other flights stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice was issued at 08:45 local time on the weekend. Many flights were operating normally before noon.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were postponed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the FAA said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airfield in the US, could encounter difficulties from low staffing later in the day.

The agency warned travelers in California to check with airlines about revised flight schedules.

The issue comes ahead of the third match of the championship, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and about one month before the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to fly in the United States.

Strain on American aviation contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and affected flight services, including aviator instruction.

It led several flight controllers to stay home on the identical date on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

On that date, the former president, who at the period was in his initial presidency as president, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the government shutdown after 35 days.
