Amateur players will have the chance to claim A$1m when they compete against elite players - including top-ranked the Spanish champion - in a single-point showdown before January's Australian Open

Event planners of the year's first Grand Slam have announced the $1 Million Single-Point Tournament, which will match 10 amateur players against elite athletes in a knockout tournament at the tournament grounds

This Innovative Event Will Work

Participants must play 'rock, paper, scissors' to decide who takes the serve or return position, and whoever wins the point will move forward to the subsequent phase

The victor of the event will receive a significant cash prize

For comparison, players who reached the semi-finals of the primary tournaments in the 2025 Australian Open won A$1.1m

The American Grand Slam organized a revamped, standalone mixed doubles tournament in the eighth month which encouraged top singles players to compete, with the victors receiving $1m

The Melbourne tournament held its inaugural One Point Slam earlier this year, but the cash prize was a smaller amount and it had limited exposure

Andrey Rublev was the sole elite competitor competing, and his run finished when he sent the single service opportunity granted into the mesh in his quarter-final

Planners have not said exactly how the event will operate, but it is anticipated to mirror a comparable structure to the previous version

The top competitors will be allowed to have a single serve and the non-professionals twice - as is the usual procedure in standard play

While it is unclear how the draw will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the location will be the Rod Laver Arena rather than the alternative court

The final stages will take place in a evening slot instead of midday timing

Participation Information

Any Australians - or international players who have registered with the governing body - can enter 'One Point Slam' events at their neighborhood facilities

The victors of the local competitions will then go into a random pairing, with one amateur player from every state and territory chosen to take part in the 'final competition' in a nighttime event on mid-January

There will also be a entry tournament in December which amateurs, developing professionals, celebrities and sports personalities can enter

It starts on the starting date and the two winners will go into Wednesday's 'final showdown' with the additional everyday players and elite competitors
