Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Major Acquisition for United

The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.

Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major boost to the team's forward line. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
