Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Documenting Two Dozen Days Incarcerated

The ex-president of France is preparing a personal account this autumn named A Prisoner’s Diary, chronicling his experience spent in custody.

This news emerged just 11 days after the former president was released as he appeals the court ruling for illegal collaboration regarding a scheme to secure presidential race money linked to the regime of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“Behind bars visibility is limited, with little to occupy time,” he notes in an extract, implying the memoir centers around his musings while in seclusion rather than wider commentary of the overcrowded and troubled correctional facilities in the country.

“Quiet is absent, not present at the prison, where noise is a lot to hear,” he states. “The noise is alas constant. However, akin to empty spaces, inner life is fortified behind bars.”

Court Appearance: Describing the Ordeal

During his plea for freedom, he participated via screen from inside the facility, characterizing his incarceration as exhausting. He stated to the judge: “I must acknowledge to all the prison staff, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this nightmare bearable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, deeply straining. It affects one on any prisoner due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

He, the ex-head of state between 2007 and 2012, became the inaugural former head of an EU country and the first postwar leader from France to be incarcerated.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he intended to spend the period to compose an account.

Reading Material

It remains unclear whether he had time to read and critique the texts he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus plus the novel by Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo, where a blameless person is sentenced to jail then breaks out to take revenge.

Prison Conditions

The former leader remained secluded due to safety concerns in a room of about nine sq metres with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison located in the capital. Security personnel occupied an adjacent room.

It was stated his diet consisted just yogurt during his stay due to concerns any food may have been contaminated. Options were available for self-catering but he turned this down, according to reports. It is uncertain if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Legal Perspective

The legal representative, who saw him regularly every day while he was in prison, told the release hearing his safety would improve outside jail rather than in custody. “There were threats against his life, heard shouts at night and the urgent intervention in an adjacent room as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Case Background

He entered custody on 21 October following a French court sentenced him to five years in prison for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to acquire political donations for his 2007 presidential race.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, and a fresh trial is scheduled for the coming spring.
